How to Get a Missouri Medical Marijuana Card in 2025: Step-by-Step Guide

Many of you know I applied for a Missouri Medical Cannabis Card the very first day it became available — and I started helping others apply that same day. I’ve literally been walking people through the process since day one!

So, if you’re wondering how to get a Missouri medical marijuana card in 2025, I can help. Thousands of Missourians qualify for medical use but still aren’t sure where to start — or what’s changed since Amendment 3 made cannabis both medical and adult-use.

At Canna Answers, our goal is to make the process simple, clear, easy, and fully compliant with Missouri law.

Step 1: Check if You Qualify
Missouri allows medical cards for a wide range of qualifying conditions — including chronic pain, anxiety or PTSD, cancer, seizure disorders, and glaucoma.

A physician can recommend cannabis for any debilitating condition, not just those listed, so don’t worry if you don’t see yours!

👉 You can view the official DHSS qualifying list here: https://health.mo.gov/safety/cannabis/how-to-apply.php

Step 2: Get a Physician Certification
You’ll need a Physician Certification Form completed by a Missouri-licensed MD or DO. Appointments can be in-person or through telehealth.

Physicians now submit certifications electronically. Once your application is ready—whether you complete it yourself or through Canna Answers you’ll be able to link your certification directly to your DHSS account.

Step 3: Apply Online with DHSS
Visit the official DHSS Cannabis Portal and create an account. You’ll link your physician certification, upload your photo ID, selfie, and pay the required state fees. If you choose Canna Answers we will do this entire part for you at no additional fee!

DHSS typically processes applications within a few days, but they technically have up to 30 days for approval.

Step 4: Download and Use Your Card
Once approved, download your medical marijuana card from the DHSS portal. Print it or save it to your phone — this allows you to legally purchase from licensed Missouri dispensaries as a medical patient.

If you also applied for a cultivation license, that document will be emailed to you as a printable attachment. You’ll need to display it in your approved cultivation area.

💡 Medical patients pay lower taxes and enjoy higher possession and cultivation limits than recreational users.

Step 5: Renew Every Three Years
Medical cards in Missouri are now valid for three years. Be sure to renew about 30 days before your expiration date to avoid any lapse.

Canna Answers can help with renewals, re-certifications, and updates anytime. We’re here year-round — and your card comes with three years of support from us.

Why Get a Medical Card If Cannabis Is Legal?
Even with adult-use legalization, a medical card still offers major benefits:

  • Lower taxes on cannabis purchases
  • Employment protections under Missouri’s medical laws
  • Higher possession
  • Travel/Out of state temporary medical cards
  • Access to caregiver designations for loved ones

Our team at Canna Answers provides Missouri cannabis consulting, document support, and one-on-one help for patients and caregivers statewide.
